Since 1972, the Little Traverse Conservancy has protected more than 37,500 acres including 100 miles of shoreline along northern Michigan's lakes, rivers, and streams. (August, 2008)

A Sanctuary Forever
NEARLY 1,400 ACRES OF GREENWOOD NOW IN CONSERVATION EASEMENT

FOR ALMOST 45 YEARS, THE GREENWOOD SANCTUARY has been a place where wildlife can seek refuge and flourish, free from the threat of hunting. This spring, the Greenwood Foundation completed a conservation easement that prevents nearly 1,400 acres of the Sanctuary from ever being developed. One of the largest privately held parcels within the Conservancy’s service area, this spectacular land includes a rich diversity of wildlife habitats including the 20-acre Lake Holy Smoke, the seven-acre Windswept Lake, and almost four miles of the Little Pigeon River and associated tributaries.

Returning to the Land

FOR THE CRUSOE family, the desire to work on the land runs strongly in their blood. Even with lifetimes of careers that often pulled them far from northern Michigan, members of the Crusoe family found themselves returning again and again to the beloved family ranch in Cheboygan. Honoring this family heritage and her own love of the land, Dolores L. Crusoe took the conservation steps to ensure that what remains of the original family ranch will stay preserved for all time.
