Winter Fling
Saturday, January 10 1-9 pm

The Driggers Preserve, located on the Boyne City Road about five miles west of Horton Bay, contains 1.5 miles of trail loops (both steep and flat sections) that offer excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The trails wind through northern hardwoods, pine plantations, meadows, and along a small stream; and offer some nice views of Lake Charlevoix along the way. There’ll be hot beverages, snacks, and a bonfire. Ski or snowshoe the trails on your own, or with an LTC guide. (There’s a full moon that night, so come late for a moonlight outing if you wish).

Greenwood Sanctuary Ski/Snowshoe
Saturday, January 17 10 am

Visit one of the largest private properties in our service area, now protected with a conservation easement. Greenwood Sanctuary is a haven for elk, porcupine, and a multitude of other wildlife. Landowner George Jury opens his gates and invites us in to explore. Trails will be groomed for skiing and snowshoeing, if snow permits. Please call 231.347.0991 to register and get directions.

Winter Nature Hike for Kids
Round Lake Nature Preserve
Saturday, January 31 10-noon

Travel by snowshoe to places unreachable
during other months and discover what wild
animals are up to in the winter! We’ll then head inside to warm up with hot cocoa and hear Odawa legends by local Native American author, Simon Otto. Limited snowshoes are available to borrow through LTC as well as through The
Outfitter of Harbor Springs! Please call early
to reserve. Recommended for ages 7-12.

All Day Birding Adventure
Eastern U.P. and Sugar Island

A short ferry ride from downtown Sault Ste Marie, Sugar Island is situated on the St. Mary’s River and lies within an important migratory flyway. In the wintertime, it is an excellent place to look for Great Grey Owls, Snow Buntings, and winter finches. Leaving from Harbor Springs, we’ll take the scenic route to the Sault, birding along the way. On the island, we’ll snowshoe into the Bailey-Lagerstrom Preserve and visit the shoreline. This will be an all-day event (please bring your own lunch), with options to join the trip in Harbor Springs, Alanson, Sault Ste Marie, or on Sugar Island. Ask about carpooling when you register.
